Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare for movement of containers and cargo
  2. Check stacking/discharge list at commencement of shift
  3. Assess and plan container/cargo consolidation
  4. Allocate and accommodate movement between stack positions
  5. Identify and check containers/cargo
  6. Check and complete documentation
  7. Issue gate pass and check clearances

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient processing of movement of containers and cargo including:

analysing hazards and risks and applying control measures

identifying and selecting resources

establishing work plans and completing tasks

assessing operational capability of equipment and work processes

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the processing movement of containers and cargo that meets all the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to coordinate work activities

demonstrates completion of processing movement of containers and cargo that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

assessing yard plans

preparing written consolidation plans

allocating and reassigning stack positions

identifying containers and cargo, checking for damage and confirming identification numbers and marks

issuing gate pass to carrier when all documentation requirements are completed

modifying activities to suit different situations and environments


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when processing the movement of containers and cargo:

understand impact of job on enterprise and individual performance

estimation of size, shape and special requirements of loads

identification of container and goods coding, IMDG markings and, where applicable, emergency information panels

identification of protective clothing and safety precautions appropriate to different tasks

understanding of site layout stacking plans and available stacking space
